Joannie Rochette put on a powerful performance Tuesday full of sorrow and grief just 3 days after her supportive mother passed away.

It was a powerfully emotional night for Canadians in the Pacific Coliseum after Joannie Rochette took the ice Tuesday night in the Olympic women’s short-program figure skating less than 3 days after her mother died.

Therese Rochette, 55, died of a heart attack on Sunday, the day after arriving in Vancouver with her husband to watch their daughter compete in the 2010 Olympic Games.

Tears could be seen on the faces of almost everyone that night as Rochette put on a graceful performance punctuated by the grief and emotion on her face.

Rochette took third place in the short program, the first part of the two-portion women’s figure skating event, receiving her medal on Thursday.

Before leaving the arena, Rochette, with tears streaming down her face, waved her hand, put it to her heart, and then blew a kiss to the audience leaving a powerful impression on the spectators who shared in her sorrow.

Aaava Whistler Hotel would like to extend their deepest sympathies for the Rochette family.

Aava Whistler Hotel congratulates Maelle Ricker as the first Canadian woman to take Olympic gold on home soil.

Maelle Ricker won the Olympic Women’s Snowboard Cross on Tuesday at Cypress Mountain during the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games, taking first place and securing her spot as Canada’s first woman to take gold on Canadian soil.

This has pushed Canada’s medal count to 5 thus far, with a pair of gold medals.

Ricker joins Alexandre Bilodeau as the first Canadian woman to take gold as a host nation.

Hailing from West Vancouver, Ricker made it to the finals in the 2006 Turin Olympic Games but wiped out and finished fourth.

Despite the criticism Cypress Mountain has received, from lack of snow to canceled tickets due to unsafe conditions, the course has so far treated Canadian athletes kindly with four medal wins.

Canada has so far claimed two historic gold medals, two silvers, and one bronze with many of our athletes showing a strong chance of taking more gold, promising what could be many historic Olympic firsts.

Parking in the resort town of Whistler can sometimes be a trying and/or expensive experience. Utilize the following tips for a more pleasant experience.

Parking in Whistler during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games or any major event could be a challenge if you are not familiar with the area.

Utilize the following tips for a more pleasant Whistler parking experience.

Look for parking signs.

This one seems obvious but can be easily forgotten. Watch for signs that show limited parking time, time of day you can park, parking fees, and other important information.

Staying longer than 2 hours in Whistler Village? Use day skier lots.

Whistler’s Marketplace lot is a popular spot for it’s free parking in Whistler Village but is limited to 2 hours maximum. We suggest using a day skier lot, just a three minute walk from Whistler Village if you plan on staying longer.

Is a permit required?

Some parking lots require a permit that needs to be displayed while you are parked.

Make sure you have change.

Another one that may seem obvious. Most lots will have change and credit card machines, but why waste time struggling to get that bill to go through or paying expensive credit fees? Canada has a $1 and $2 coin, save these coins for parking fees to save yourself some hassle.

Is overnight parking permitted?

Some lots do not permit overnight parking, so make sure you inquire as to the parking hours.

Does your hotel offer parking accommodation?

When planning your Whistler vacation it is important to plan your parking accommodation ahead of time. Check if your hotel offers parking and be sure to book a space at the same time as you book your Whistler hotel room.

Plan ahead and know the rates.

When planning your day of activities in Whistler knowing where to park is important. Know the fees of the parking lot as some lots charge different rates at different hours.

Be aware of winter parking regulations.

Winter parking regulations are in effect November 1 through March 31 so that snowplows may easily clear the streets of snow. In subdivisions, parking on the even side of the street is prohibited Monday through Friday from 9-5PM. There is no parking on the odd side of the street during this time.

For the 2010 Olympic Games use a Park & Ride lot.

Park & Ride lots are safe and conveniently located, allowing you to park your car for free or a small fee and then catch public transit to your Olympic activity, avoiding dealing with the stress of rush hour traffic and reducing your carbon footprint.

You don’t need a car in Whistler.

The most important tip on this list. Public Transport in Whistler is extremely convenient preferable to traveling by car. Save money on gas and parking lot costs and spend a little extra on something nice.

If you follow these tips you can avoid parking tickets or towing fees. As Whistler is a high traffic vacation spot parking rules and regulations are strictly enforced.

Should you avoid out Whistler parking advice and find yourself with a parking ticket, you can visit the Resort Municipality of Whistler to pay your Whistler parking ticket online.

Alexandre Bilodeau takes the gold medal in the Olympic men's moguls event at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games.

Canada’s long wait for the first Olympic gold medal as a host nation ended Sunday evening after Alexandre Bilodeau won the men’s moguls event in Vancouver.

Canada has hosted the Olympic Games twice before with the summer Olympics in Montreal in 1976 and the winter Olympics in Calgary in 1988, winning five silver medals in Montreal and two silver medals in Calgary.

The 22-year-old hailing from Rosemere, Que., created history on the Cypress Mountain course with one of the best moguls runs of his career, giving Canada it’s first gold medal on home soil, finishing ahead of Australian champion Dale Begg-Smith and American Bryon Wilson.

Moguls skiing was first introduced to the Olympic Games at the 1988 Calgary Games as a demonstration sport, attracting massive popularity resulting in it’s induction as an official medal sport at Albertville in 1992.

Mogul skiing is part of the discipline of freestyle skiing, where the ski terrain is characterized by a large number of different bumps referred to as “moguls”, and is an intense and exciting sport.
