GranFondo LogoThe RBC Granfondo makes its return to Whistler this Saturday, September 7. Thousands of participants will hop on their bike and make the 122KM journey from downtown Vancouver to the Whistler Village.

The event was started in 2010 by two cycling enthusiasts who had the vision of producing a world class cycling event in Western Canada. It was determined that the legendary Sea to Sky Highway that connects Vancouver and Whistler is known for its windy roads and spectacular views of the West Coast Mountain Ranges would make an ideal location.

Since its inception in 2010 the event has continued to grow and as of last year was capped off at a 7000 rider limit. The event has established itself as one of North America's premier cycling events and continues to attract riders from around the globe and locals alike. This year's event is once again shaping up to be an amazing success, for more information on how to sign up for the ride of a lifetime head on over to the GranFondo registration page.

The GranFondo is open to riders of all abilities and skill levels. Contestants can choose from one of two starting points. The main course the GranFondo starts in downtown Vancouver and spans 122KM or 76 miles. Riders are encouraged to set their own pace and are categorized from front to back depending on their estimated time of finish as determined by the riders. This means the professional riders will be placed in the front and the novice riders will start in the back as to cut down on course congestion.

Riders can also choose to start in to city of Squamish located roughly at the mid-way point of the course (MediaFondo). The Squamish course spans 55KM or 34 miles.

There are several places along the Sea to Sky Highway that serve as suitable viewing places for spectators. If you're a Whistler spectator the best place to view the riders come in is Blackcomb Way. The riders will enter Whistler via the highway and take a right hand turn onto Village Gate Boulevard which connects with Blackcomb way. From here riders will make their way to the finish line at Lot 4 in the Day Parking Lot.

Blackcomb Way will be lined with fences where spectators can cheer on the riders as they make their last turns to the finish line. The riders will begin the GranFondo at 6:45AM in downtown Vancouver. The first riders to enter Whistler are expected around 10AM.
