The RBC GranFondo is meant to mimic the ultra popular bike road races held in Europe. Racers will start the event in Downtown Vancouver on Thurlow and Homer Street. From here they will cross the Lion's Gate Bridge and make their way through North Vancouver on towards Whistler.
The course covers 122KM and over 1250 feet of elevation changes from start to finish. When competitors get to Whistler they will ride through Whistler's Main St and finish in the Lot 9 Parking Lot just minutes from Whistler Village.
This year's race is set to begin at 6:45AM in Downtown Vancouver with top riders expecting to enter Whistler around 10AM. Competitors participating in the race will be staggered at the start line according to the estimated finishing time and skill level. Professional riders will be placed at the front of the starting pack in order to eliminate congestion on the track throughout the race.
The race will take place along Highway 99 or the Sea to Sky Highway the only direct road connecting Vancouver and Whistler. During the day of the race a special lane along the highway will be shut down for use of the event.
This year's GranFondo will also feature a special MedioFondo which will instead start in Squamish. Squamish is located 67KM up the road from Vancouver and offers riders a distance more manageable for beginner riders or those looking for a shorter route. Those wishing to compete in the MedioFondo will begin at 10:30AM in Downtown Squamish and make the 55KM trek up to Whistler.
If you or someone you know is looking to compete in this year's event visit the RBC GranFondo website for more information including registration details. If you are just looking to take in the sights as racers cross the finish line in Whistler, than simply make your way out to Whistler's Village Gate Blvd around 10AM and cheer on the riders as they come in.
