Spring Golfing in Whistler

The snow’s still here but with spring quickly approaching were set to preview the up-coming 2013 Whistler golf season.

With three championship courses in the Whistler Village and one more just 20 minutes down the road in Pemberton, Whistler truly is one of the premier golf destinations in North America. All signs point to an early start to the season this year hopefully sometime in April the courses will be clear of snow and ready for the new golf year.

To get a sense of what Whistler golf has to offer we will preview the four courses in the Whistler area. Don’t forget spring golf is one of the cheapest times of the year to play golf in Whistler. And not only that, it’s also one of most comfortable times of the year as the temperature is sunny but hasn’t hit the summer heat highs yet.

Whistler Golf Club

Whistler Golf Club Wide

Par 71 - Yardages: Blacks - 6722, Blues - 6336, Whites - 6004, Greens – 5348

The self named Whistler Golf Club was the first golf course to be introduced to the Whistler area in 1983. Since it’s induction the course has seen many up-grades including an major renovation to the club house and course in 2000. For my buck this is the best value course in the area. Whistler Golf Club can be a tricky track to navigate due to the tight tree lined fairways. But if you can keep it on the shortstuff Whistler Golf Club’s fantastic greens allow to you to score. If you’re looking for a great course at a great value this should be you’re first stop. It should also be noted that Whistler Golf Club is located right beside Aava Whistler Hotel.

Nicklaus North

Nicklaus North Wide

Par 71: Gold - 6908, Blue - 6413, White - 6004, Green - 5489, Red - 4732

Whistler’s premier golf club Nicklaus North has long had the reputation as Whistler’s most reconized course. Much of that has to do with the man in which this terrific course is named after. That’s right the legendary Jack Nicklaus himself and his team are responsible for this courses design. This amazing track is everything you want in a resort course, challenging but fair, beautiful and designed into the landscape not radically changing the landscape. I always tell people if they were to play one course in Whistler price no option – play Nicklaus. The beauty of the course and simplicity of the design along with the amazing condition it’s always in combine for an unforgettable experience.

Chateau Golf Club

Chateau Golf Wide

Par 72: Gold - 6635, Blue - 6243, White - 5692, Red - 5157

The most unique course on this list the Chateau Golf Club is unlike any course you’ve probably ever played. Carved into the Whistler Mountain Range the Chateau is mountain golfing at its peak. During the round you march up and down the mountain side like a goat – well maybe not march carts are mandatory on this amazing track. It’s not un-common on this course to tee off several hundred yards above where the green will finish or play another hundred yards up-hill the very next hole. What makes this course special is everything I’ve mentioned above, the dramatic elevation changes along with the most amazing views of any course in the Sea-to-Sky. If you’re looking to play a course to tell your buddies back home about then look no further than the Chateau.

Big Sky Golf Club

Big Sky Golf Wide

Par 72: Black - 7001, Blue - 6496, White - 6037, Green - 5208

The only course on this list that isn’t located in the Whistler Village is Big Sky Golf located in the town of Pemberton just 25 minutes north of Whistler. Although it may not be a hop skip and a jump away from the hotel this amazing course is well worth the visit. I may have called Nicklaus North the one track I tell people to play - but this course is my personal favorite course in the area. This course was designed to be a modern take on the classic British Iles link-style courses of old. The wonderful course is the very best of old and new and provides a different scenery from the Whistler backdrop. If your planning on playing more than one Whistler course or even just one don’t forget to include Big Sky Golf in your itinerary. Trust us you won’t regret it.
