Snowboard Big Air Preview
When: Saturday, April 20 - 7:30PM to 9:30PM | Where: Skiers Plaza
Possibly the biggest event of the World Ski & Snowboard Festival is the Snowboard Big Air competition. Professional snowboarders from all corners of the world will battle it out at this 5 star World Snowboard Tour event. A custom 70 foot table jump has been constructed at the base of Whistler Mountain for the contest.
Thirty pro riders have been invited to this year's Big Air representing their home countries of Canada, USA, Sweden, Norway & Switzerland. The format of the contest is a three round elimination process. Beginning at 7:30PM all thirty riders will take two runs with the top twelve scores advancing to round 2. The same process will happen twice more with the field being chopped in half each time. This will leave us with three riders left for the final round. During the final round the snowboarders will have 1 run to bust their best move and win over the judges. The top three places will be paid with $15,000 up for 1st, $6,000 for 2nd and $4,000 for 3rd.
During the Big Air contest Vancouver hip hop duo Swollen Members will be performing a FREE concert. The music will serve as the soundtrack for the Big Air happening right beside the concert stage.
The Big Air contest takes place from 7:30PM - 9:30PM. Riders will be practicing as early as 6:30PM if you want to hit up the action earlier. The Big Air jump has been constructed at the base of Whistler Mountain which makes Skiers Plaza the perfect place to view all the action. Remember as we noted before this is one of the marquee events of the festival so expect a packed house. If you want good seats, especially at a bar like the GLC or Longhorn you better get their plenty early to claim them.
