IRONMAN Banner

IRONMAN® Canada will be making it's first every appearance in Whistler, B.C this Sunday, August 25. The competition will take place throughout the day at various locations around Whistler & Pemberton.

This event is Canada's version of the national championships and also serves as an official quailifier for the IRONMAN® World Championships that take place every year in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

IRONMAN® events are triathlon based competition known for their extreme distances and toughness. Athletes generally train up to a year or longer for the event in order to prepare for the physicall and mental toll it can take on the body.

The Course

Athletes will compete in a swimming, biking and running portion. The first discipline swimming takes place at Whistler's Alta Lake. Participants will complete two laps of the lake totaling 3.8KM before they head over to the biking station. Once athletes leave the water they will hop on their bikes and complete a gain 180KM course that see's them racing up to the Callaghan Valley then back through the village, followed by a trip out to the Pemberton Meadows - via Highway 99 and back once again to Whistler Village. The final stage of the event is the running portion which will takes place on the famous Whistler Valley Trail System. Participants will complete a looping lap of the 42KM long track. As athletes finish the run they will pull onto Blackcomb Way adjacent to the Day Parking Lots. Runners will make their final jog along the long stretch of road as the crowd cheers them into the finish.

SpectatorsWhere to Watch

There are several places to watch the IRONMAN® race however race officials have published a brochure labeling the best places to watch each event.

Swimming | Spectators are encouraged to walk or ride their bikes along the valley trail to Rainbow Park where they can catch all the swimming action. The event will begin at 6:50AM with the men's start followed shortly thereafter at 6:55AM with the women's start. Note the reason they encourage you to walk or ride to the park is because they will be shutting off car access for the day. Swimmers will be on the course from 6:50AM to 9:30AM.

Biking | The biking portion run's all over Whistler therefore there are so many places along the highway you can walk up to and catch the action. However the official spectators viewing area for the biking portion is located right outside Aava Whistler Hotel. This area will be poping off all day with food vendors and people so come and join us throughout the day for all the madness. The bikers will be on the course from 8AM to 5PM.

Running | The best place to catch the running action is at the Blackcomb Way finish line. This is where the athletes will be making their final push to the end. The place will be packed with spectators cheering them on as they come in. The first finishers are expected to roll in around 3PM. You can also catch the running event at various points along the Valley Trail as long as you are off the trail.
