RBC GranFondo Whistler

"Gran Fondo" is loosely translated from Italian as "big ride." Last year saw the inaugural RBC GranFondo Whistler. A 125 km bike ride from Vancouver to Whistler.  It was a huge success and since then Whistler has transformed itself into a road biking Mecca.  This is hardly surprising since it is already the Mecca for downhill and cross country mountain biking.

The number of road bikes on the roads around Whistler has dramatically increased as the sport gains popularity.  Favourite road bike routes in the area include a two hour round trip from Whistler to Pemberton.  The beautiful Pemberton Meadows road is also a very popular route.  A popular round trip route in Whistler is taking the Westside Road past Alta Lake, which offers spectacular views of Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains.

Starting in Downtown Vancouver on the corner of Georgia Street and Burrard, riders begin the epic journey at 7am sharp. The riders will travel west on Georgia, through Stanley Park, over the Lions Gate Bridge, up Taylor Way to reach the upper levels Trans Canada Highway.  They then follow the stunning Sea to Sky Highway all the way up to Whistler.  Highlights on the way including the spectacular views of Howe Sound, the majestic Shannon Falls waterfall, the towering Chief, through the Cheakamus canyon before ending in Whistler Village.   Once in Whistler Village, a celebration worthy of this epic ride will include live music, a beer garden, massage tents, and a rider expo in the plaza.

The GranFondo is the full distance of the ride designed to challenge endurance and all abilities are welcome. There is also a "Medio" version which is appropriate for those not quite ready for the full distance but who still want to participate in the challenge.  The Medio in the RBC GranFondo Whistler will start in Squamish to cover a distance of 60 km, but will still be a challenge by including the steepest of the climbs up to Whistler.

Whether you are a participant or spectator this is going to be a great September day!
