Blue Pandas Win Olympus 72Hr Filmmaker Showdown at 2017 WSSF

On April 13th, over 1500 people came together in the Whistler Conference Centre to witness the art of filmmaking in its unadulterated form at the OLYMPUS 72hr Filmmaker Showdown.

There was over 30 teams competing in the event at WSSF this year. Each group was tasked with filming, editing, and producing a short film, between 3-5 minutes, within 100km of Whistler in only 72 hours. Every year, a surprise prop must be incorporated for a at least five consecutive seconds. What was the surprise prop this year? A push broom.

This year the Vancouver/Victoria group, Blue Pandas, brought home the big prize – Best of Show – for their film ‘Two Guys, One Shirt’. This is the Blue Panda’s 2nd win of the 72 Hour Filmmaker Showdown, they took home first place in 2015 as well for their film, ‘Grandpa’s Treasure Trail’.

‘Two Guys, One Shirt’ is a comical look at the life of conjoined twins whose desire to be separated takes them on a journey into the woods. There they meet an eccentric guru who promises to split them, and after an unfulfilling journey they realize the importance of what they have.

“We were so relieved to win, we didn’t think we would… It was an incredible journey getting here.” says Ben Giesbrecht, Blue Pandas Director

Once again, the Blue Panda’s took home the $7000 cheque along with an additional $5000 for shooting their film entirely with Olympus gear! All that cash plus over $4300 in Olympus Gear and other prizes should make for some happy Pandas.

Congratulations to Whistler local, Kyle Kileen, whose short film ‘Dawn of the Dead Season’ took home the People’s Choice Award. This comedy horror depicts Whistler after it’s struck by an STD outbreak that turns its victims into zombies. Watch it above!
