It’s National Aboriginal Day In Whistler

This Wednesday, June 21, 2017 is Aboriginal Day in Canada. The Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre has planned a day full of activities for guests and visitors to take part in.

SLCC - Inside

Admission to the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre will be by donation all day long. Start your day off with a little outdoor yoga on the patio with lululemon Whistler from 9:15 am to 10:30 am. After that, everyone is invited to witness a First Nations sage smudging and blessing, done by Barry don and Clara John from Lil’wat nation, in the Great Hall from 10:30 am to 11 am.

Aboriginal Day Activities

National Aboriginal Day will also feature different events and activities at the Cultural Centre throughout the day. Some of the activities will be running most of the day. You can expect hourly cultural presentations, performances, and storytelling in the Great Hall between 10 am - 4 pm.

As you’re exploring the Cultural Centre you’ll discover local artisans providing demonstrations and selling their wares from 10 am - 3 pm. If just watching demonstrations isn’t enough for you, you should check out the Istken Hall where, from 10 am - 4 pm, you can participate in Aboriginal craft activities. Watch some tutorials from experienced crafters then give it a go yourself.

Don’t want to be inside all day on National Aboriginal Day? Take an Interpretive Forest Walk with a cultural ambassador and discover local flora and fauna and its traditional uses among the First Nations.

After all these activities, you’ll probably be hungry by now. Well, just head on down to the Thunderbird Cafe BBQ where they’ll be offering specials from 11 am - 3 pm for guests.

First Nations Feast

Speaking of food, you can join the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre on selective Tuesday and Sunday nights for a First Nations Feast. It just so happens that one of these delicious First Nations Feasts happens on June 20th, right before National Aboriginal Day! You can enjoy a beautifully prepared indigenous inspired feast that comes complete with a cultural presentation by a world renowned performance team.

This buffet style feast includes; fresh baked bannock, wild mushroom and barley pilaf, two nation 8-spiced BBQ chicken, buffalo smokies, west coast cedar plank salmon with maple glaze, warm berry crumble with xuseum whipping cream, and much more.

For more information about the First Nations Feast, and to buy tickets, you can visit the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre website. And, if you’d like to know more about the National Aboriginal Day Celebration in Whistler at the Cultural Centre you can find that on their website as well.
